Obstacles to Saudi Women’s Participation in Volunteering
A study applied to the city of Riyadh

Abstract : Volunteerism supports the government’s development efforts and gives an honest indication of community members’ sense of citizenship, loyalty, and social responsibility, Given the importance of voluntary or charitable work, volunteer culture needs a fertile environment to grow and gain the participation of all community members, especially women, as they represent half of the community and strongly influence the other half. This study sought to identify the obstacles facing women that limit their participation in volunteering and to find solutions to address those constraints and enable women to participate effectively, A cross-sectional survey for Saudi women was applied and an interview guide for social work experts in Riyadh city. The study was conducted on 387 Saudi female volunteers and 25 social worker experts. Results of this study identified several obstacles facing volunteers from personal, social, administrative and organizational aspects. Which impeded their participation. The study recommended the establishment of an integrated network to plan and support women’s volunteer work, the creation of an electronic database of information on available volunteer opportunities, the inclusion of feedback opportunities for volunteers to evaluate the institution at the end of the volunteer period, and the establishment of partnerships with universities to train volunteers.
