Abstract.  The aim of this research is to study Trevor Le Gassick's translation of Halim Barakat's novel عودة الطائر إلى البحر, Days of Dust.  The translator's methodology will be examined and evaluated in view of some translation theories.  Changes, adjustments, condensations and omissions will be traced, examined, and evaluated by comparing the text of the English translation TL with the Arabic original text SL.   The study shows that the translator omitted, from the original text, a significant portion of passages and sentences as well as condensing others.  All omitted passages and sentences are listed in the Appendix.  He overlooked, in his translation, two main elements of the original novel; the role Wagner's opera the Flying Dutchman and the human sides of the characters.  The paper will discuss the effect of this omission and condensation on the TL text.  The question of faithfulness of the translation to the SL text, and whether or not it succeeded in conveying the messages of the novel, will be discussed as well.  An overall evaluation of the translation will conclude the paper.
